Online learning › Virtual fault-finding simulator

Virtual fault-finding simulator

Practise fault finding on simulated BMS installations. Each scenario either has a hidden fault or is a healthy installation. Work through Identify → Prove → Verify → Restore → Record, then get scored feedback on your diagnosis.

The simulator is part of the online course and is for enrolled delegates only, so you'll be asked to log in first.

Scenario packs

Day 2 · Hardwired field devices

An AHU training panel with two thermistor temperature sensors and a 0–10 V duct pressure transmitter. 7 scenarios: 1 healthy installation and 6 with a hidden wiring, signal or configuration fault.

Day 3 · RS-485 / Modbus network

A six-device Modbus RTU daisy chain. 4 scenarios, each with a hidden network fault.

Scenario names stay hidden until you submit your record, so you diagnose from the evidence. You can choose a scenario or take a random one.

Tools and records

  • Multimeter for voltage, resistance, continuity and mA loop current.
  • Signal injector to drive 0–10 V or mA into a BMS input and check the scaling.
  • Cable proving with a test link, a lever connector block and a wander lead.
  • Drawing view linked to the rig: tap a terminal on either to highlight it on the other.
  • Point-to-point and defect sheet, downloadable as an A4 PDF.

How-to videos

Four short how-to videos, with on-screen captions and a text version of each, are on Day 2 of the online course for enrolled delegates:

  1. Getting started: scenario packs and the screen layout: Choose a scenario pack and scenario, confirm what you have identified, and find your way around the bench, the BMS front end, Restore and Record.
  2. Reading a 0–10 V signal, the wiring drawing and the signal injector: Read the duct pressure transmitter's 0–10 V output, compare it with the front end, open the wiring drawing, then open the disconnect link and inject a test signal.
  3. Proving a cable end to end and testing each core to earth: Isolate the sensor loop, prove the pair end to end with a test link and then a connector block, confirm OL with the link off, and test each core to earth.
  4. Restoring the installation and recording your result: Put everything back using the Restore checklist, record your diagnosis and notes, submit for scored feedback, then fill in and download the point-to-point sheet.

Install the simulator app

The simulator is also an installable web app that works offline once installed.

  • iPhone / iPad (Safari): open the simulator, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
  • Android (Chrome): open the simulator, tap ⋮, then Install app or Add to Home screen.
  • Desktop Chrome / Edge: open the simulator and click the install icon in the address bar.

The simulator is included with enrolment on the online course and is for enrolled delegates only: log in first. Attempt history and scores are saved on your own device only. Logging out clears the simulator's offline copy from this device.
